About NIRD in 2019 and 2020
Author: Vigdis Guldseth
Several things have happened in the year 2019 in the storage services, impacting directly our end users. Primarily there has been an instability of the NIRD hardware and consequently an overall delay in the expansion of the system. This resulted for the allocations 2019.1 and 2019.2 being delayed for some projects. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this might have caused and is causing to your research. The hardware vendor has now managed to root-cause the instability.
Furthermore, Sigma2 has now purchased a large storage capacity (3.5PB) that will expand NIRD up to our originally planned capacity for the year 2020. The delivery is expected in January 2020. More information will be published on the Sigma2 webpage in the beginning of January.
Data volume is challenging
In 2019, we have also observed a steeper increment of NIRD data volume than in the previous year, thus suggesting that the allocation of the resources during 2020 will be also challenging. We therefore would like to invite our users to start archiving their data at the end of the project. This allows us to repurpose the disk for active projects. Furthermore, data owner gets rewarded by citation of the downloaded dataset. Finally, the archive data storage is for free and ensure preservation of the dataset beyond the project lifetime.
New procurement coming up
The 2020 will be the year of the procurement of a new storage system to be deployed in 2021. In this process, we aim at getting a solid hardware architecture that will capture the needs of our users and guarantee high availability and quality standards.
