Call for e-infrastructure resources 2018.1

The deadline for applying for allocations for period 2018.1 is 9 February 2018. The earliest project start is 1 April 2018.

Four application types

Applications for compute (HPC) resources

The current national e-infrastructure for research and higher education in Norway consists of the three computing facilities  Abel, Stallo and Fram.

Refer to https://documentation.sigma2.no for technical information about the HPC infrastructure.

Applications for small scale exploratory work

UNINETT Sigma2 offers immediate access to the national e-infrastructure for small resource projects. To explore feasibility of the e-infrastructure, it is possible to apply for a small scale HPC allocation.

Such allocations are granted on the basis of a simplified free-text application submitted by email to sigma2@uninett.no, describing:

  • Purpose
  • Anticipated resource needs
  • Software needs
  • Duration
Important:
A small-scale allocation is limited to a maximum of 5,000 CPU-hours.
The maximum length of an allocation is 3 months.

Applications for storage resources

NIRD (National Infrastructure for Research Data) is the current data storage system and provides data-storage for the new generation of HPC systems. NIRD provides services to end-users by combining a modern data-centric architecture with cutting-edge technology.

Refer to www.sigma2.no/content/data-storage for further information about NIRD.

Applications for Services for sensitive data (TSD)

Services for Sensitive Data (TSD) is a platform to store, compute and analysis on research sensitive data in compliance with Norwegian regulations regarding individuals’ privacy. TSD is developed and operated by UiO in partnership with UNINETT Sigma2, and is a part of the national infrastructure.

Research projects that have obtained an approval from the data protection authority of reference (REK, NSD, Datatilsynet or similar) may apply through this call if:

  • The project needs HPC resources
  • The project needs 10 TB or more storage capacity

Projects that are granted resources in TSD through this call, will have to register for access to TSD through the standard TSD application, if they do not have already access to the infrastructure.
Refer to http://www.uio.no/english/services/it/research/sensitive-data/access/ for more info about getting access to TSD.

The introduction of the extended TSD services is pending final approval from
the Sigma2 board and UiO.

How to apply?

Sigma2 provides an online application tool service for researchers using the national e-infrastructure resources. Previous applications are available for reuse in the application tool.

As of December 2017 the online application tool in the Metacenter Administrative System has a new design.

The online application form and status of existing allocations is available on

www.metacenter.no/mas/application/project

Who can apply?

Individuals and groups from the following Norwegian organizations can apply for access to the resources in the national e-infrastructure:

  • Norwegian universities and university colleges
  • Governmental Research Centers
  • Entities or projects financed by the Ministry of Education and Research or the Research Council of Norway
  • Industrial parties who contribute to the funding of the e-infrastructure

The resources in the national e-infrastructure are available for research and education, but written agreements may be established with UNINETT Sigma2 for other usage of the resources. Organizations that do not fall in the above categories but would like to have access, should contact UNINETT Sigma2.

The applicant must either hold a permanent position or be a postdoctoral fellow at his/her organization. Master students, PhD students and guest researchers cannot apply directly, but must arrange this via a superior (e.g., supervisor or host) that holds a permanent position or is a postdoctoral fellow at the organization.

Application evaluation

The decisions of the Resource Allocation Committee are governed by the Guidelines for Resource Allocation on the National e-infrastructure.

The Resource Allocation Committee assigns allocations to projects a few weeks before the start of each allocation period. It is therefore important to submit an application during the regular calls.

Mandatory requirements

UNINETT Sigma2 is constantly working to improve the quality of the incoming applications. A mandatory requirement in the application scheme is to provide the funding sources. This information is essential to justify the continuing operation and development of the national e-infrastructure. It is also a requirement that project leaders report the scientific results of ongoing projects by linking the allocation project ID to their scientific publications in CRIStin (www.cristin.no).

Contribution model

As announced on www.sigma2.no/user-contribution Sigma2 has introduced a limited financial contribution model, currently only relevant for projects in the SFF and INFRASTRUCTURE programs within the Research Council of Norway and will also apply to TSD projects. The cost for TSD projects can be found here

Projects covered by this model will be contacted by Sigma2.
