NCC services

Through the National Competence Center for HPC, your company gains access to expertise in high-performance computing (HPC) and data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. We can assist you with:

  • Software development
  • Testing
  • Execution
  • Optimisation
  • Data management and analysis with scaling in highly parallel environments

We support you throughout the entire process—from exploring and understanding the potential in your business, implementing and optimising digital workflows, to customising and implementing digital solutions for specific domains that are crucial for your company.

We aim to reduce what can be perceived as technological barriers, so your company can focus on leveraging and optimising the value-creating processes for you.

Collaboration with other stakeholders

To provide more comprehensive services to companies, the Competence Center collaborates in networks and innovation clusters focusing on:

  • Digital innovation (EDIH)
  • Specific domains
  • AI/ML
  • Data management
  • Privacy and security
  • Innovation

We also collaborate with companies and organisations outside of Norway to offer more extensive services and expertise otherwise unavailable nationally.

Unique National Support System for SMBs in Norway

Norway boasts a uniquely comprehensive support system that assists SMBs throughout the entire process of digitalisation—from application to project completion. Within this support system, you will find:

At our National Competence Center for HPC, you gain access to national supercomputers and support to explore whether your business can achieve greater efficiency and competitive advantages by adopting advanced technologies like this.

Innovation Norway has extensive expertise in EU application processes and can provide advisory services for application writing, serving as a crucial support in preparation for application hearings.

The digital innovation hubs (EDIH) Nemonoor and Oceanopolis specialise in artificial intelligence and big data. They assist businesses in accessing relevant expertise and support from their collaborative networks within their domains.

Remember, we are here in the support system ready to assist you. Whether you have questions, need guidance to get started, or want to discuss opportunities for your business.

Additionally, we collaborate with numerous Centres of Excellence and other HPC competence centers across Europe.

Test before you invest

Sigma2 is one of the partners in the National Competence Center for HPC and owns the national supercomputers and storage systems for public research in Norway.

Through Sigma2, the Competence Center offers free testing (up to 20,000 CPU hours) through the Small Scale Explorative Work (SSEW) service. Here, you can experiment with an idea or conduct testing before potentially investing in expanded use.

Sigma2's infrastructure is funded by the Research Council of Norway in collaboration with the Universities of Bergen, Oslo, Tromsø, and NTNU. Sigma2 can allocate up to 5% of total capacity to commercial customers, and government regulations require that such services be offered at prices comparable to market rates.

Training and activities

In addition to providing advice, guidance, and access to the national supercomputers and storage systems, we also organize training programs focused on knowledge transfer.

We typically arrange and fund training based on demand. Please look at this course overview for upcoming training opportunities related to the national services.

Useful Abbreviations

As someone new or unfamiliar with the world of computational science, you might encounter several abbreviations that it would be useful to be familiar with.

Here your find some of the most common one.

  • AI = Artificial Intelligence

  • CPU = Central Proseccing Unit

  • HPDA = High-Performance Data Analysis

  • HPC = High-Performance Computing /

  • NCC = National Competence Centre. This is often used as an abbreviation for all the national competence centers around Europe, such as our National Competence Center for HPC.

  • ML = Machine Learning

The establishment of the competence centre is an EU initiative through the EuroCC project, and similar "National Competence Centres" (NCCs) have been set up across Europe. The purpose of establishing these centers is to support and promote European industry in the global market.

Through this initiative, we have close collaboration with the other 32 European countries participating in the EuroCC project, which also grants you access to a wide range of European training opportunities.
