Meeting the growing need for secure data storage

05.09.2025

The global situation has underscored how vital it is to safeguard critical research data. To strengthen resilience, we has accelerated the expansion of NIRD – the National e-Infrastructure for Research Data. This ensures that Norway’s most important scientific data remains secure, reliable, and accessible for researchers across disciplines.

Norway’s largest research data storage

With its third expansion, NIRD now offers a total capacity of around 75 petabytes – the largest big data storage solution ever built in Norway.

The expansion takes place in the NIRD Data Lake, which integrates seamlessly with laboratory equipment, cloud services, and the Olivia and LUMI supercomputers.

Stability, scalability and seamless use

Powered by robust IBM hardware and software, NIRD is designed for long-term stability, scalability, and versatility. The latest expansion was carried out without disruption to users and includes new software features to streamline workflows, including closer integration with Olivia.

Secure by design

NIRD is located in the highly secure Lefdal Mine Data Centers, where research data is protected against natural disasters, war, and terrorism. The expansion is supported by 20 million NOK in the revised national budget, allocated specifically to protect Norwegian data currently at risk abroad.

Supporting the future of research

From climate science to language technology and AI research, the expanded NIRD provides the storage capacity researchers need to drive innovation and knowledge development in Norway.
